Work in Progress

today, i had the pleasure of shooting with Arena Stage! my assignment was to create some pre-production photos for one of their upcoming plays, "The Book Club Play". Karen Zacarías is the playwright behind this comedy about a book club that gets turned upside down when a newcomer joins and causes things to heat up. the play centers around a woman named Ana (Kate Eastwood Norris) who lives in a perfect world and hosts a bi-weekly book club meeting in her living room. members include Ana's husband Rob (Eric Messner), Rob's friend and Ana's ex-boyfriend Will (Tom Story), Ana's friend Jen (Ashlie Atkinson), Ana's prot´g´at work Lilly (Rachel Holmes), and a new guy named Alex (Fred Aresnault). definitely sounds like a recipe for disaster to me! here's a preview of some of the images from today...

i hope i get the chance to catch one of these performances (from october 7th to november 6th in the Mead Center's Kogod Cradle) and i can't wait to see what they do with the photos!

Sneak Peek: Mitch and Karen's Wedding

i've known mitch and karen for a few years now, and i've done several performances and shows with their kids over the years as well. based on that, it was not only a privilege to be a guest at their wedding, but i was also privileged with being able to shoot their big day! here's a preview!

the ceremony was really simple and elegant. a lot of music, which makes perfect sense with the merging to two very musical families. if i'm not mistaken, mitch actually wrote some (or all?) of the music himself. the reception was also very classy and elegant and it was definitely a great party!

i'd like to congratulate karen and mitch on their marriage and i wish them both a wonderful life together!

Oh Shenandoah...

i long to see you... or so the song goes. sometimes it's nice to just go out and shoot some photos just for yourself. no assignments, no incentives. just pure enjoyment. this past saturday i had the pleasure of attending a wedding out in luray, virginia where i stumbled upon some of the most beautiful scenery i have seen in a really long time. or at least since i've been able to use a camera to capture it the way the world deserves to be seen. it reminded me of how much i miss going camping, and the time i went to nova scotia for a family reunion. i may enjoy city life today, but i can assure you i will eventually be hanging my hat in the country!

these photos were taken in the shenandoah valley in virginia. beautiful, highly-recommended place to shoot some landscapes! and also not that far from dc, took my friend and i an hour and a half to get there. park admission is only 3$ and you can always find a neat place to eat or an art gallery in luray while you're there!

Just an Update

finally got a facebook fanpage... and anyone who reads this should probably become a fan...

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sbimagery/249241315088517

it's not really up-and-running as much as i want it to yet, but i need a much bigger fan-base before i can really start doing anything anyways. so tell your friends to become fans also :-)

in other news, i am very excited to be shooting the wedding of two friends on mine this saturday. Karen and Mitch have known each other for a very long time and are tying the knot this saturday at the open gate church in waldorf, md. i've worked with Mitch several times as a music director and accompanist for some of the shows i've done and met Karen through being around the family. i can assure you that the ceremony will be beautiful and that the reception will be a complete blast, and i cannot wait to share the photos here.

Update

well i haven't posted anything for a while so i figured i would write a little something to keep people up-to-date. the Kennedy Center is keeping me super busy, but not busy enough to stop me from getting some other work done! some photos i did for The Studio Theatre here in DC have hit their web-site and i couldn't be happier/more exciting about it. i posted about it on my other blog, The Fourth Wall, so you should go check out the photos over there!!! i think they look pretty nice and i hope i get to see the show while it's running. i've also been super busy with some headshots and such, which i hope some of which will be up soon so keep checking back for those.

other than that i've just been occupied with rehearsals for Chicago, auditioning left and right and applying for and interviewing for jobs (fingers crossed i'll land something soon!). that's basically it for me lately and i hope to have more to show soon enough!

thanks for stopping by!

Kosoko Performance Group

through my internship (which is going great by the way!), a handful of other interns and myself have teamed up with one of the fellows here at the Kennedy Center to help build and promote his performance group. Kosoko Performance Group was founded in 2006 and is a philadelphia-based, interdisciplinary performance group that is set up as an ensemble of dancers, actors, writers, visual artists, etc. i am heading up the graphics for this endeavor and thought i would share with you some of the process. currently, i am working on the re-branding and this is what i've come up with.

i have basically taken the previous logo which was a photograph and used the shape of the figure to create the silhouetted figures in the photo above. my goal is to finalize these soon and get to work on laying out a press kit for KPG in the next couple of weeks. leave comments here and elt me know what you think! i will also be designing banners and buttons and graphics for the organizations web-site, and consulting on some content for strategic and artistic planning.

anyways, i also have a few weddings coming up and hopefully a few headshot sessions, so be on the lookout for those. also, i updated my web-site a little bit with a new bio and a new gallery for my graphic design portfolio (make sure to check it out to see some of the other work i am doing through my internship). and feel free to leave comments!

man, i love being busy!

Headshots : Barrett Johnson

here are those headshots i've been talking about. i picked a few of my favorites to share with you all. Barrett and i have been friends for a few years and it was about time to get some photos of her into my portfolio. they came out quite excellent, but it's easy to get great photos when you have a great subject. have a look...

hope you like them!

Blackleaf Update

a couple of months ago i posted a finished photograph i did for a new product which is launching called "Blackleaf Vodka", but i didn't really think much of it because it was an assignment for school. i randomly decided to check the web-site last night and was very excited to see my image! they have the site separated into different tabs, and mine is under the "Signature Drinks" tab.

if you remember from my post (or check my web-site!!! www.scottybeland.com), you already know that i shot the pomegranate concoction which they call the "Blackleaf Pomtini". the red one! it's really neat to see my work used to advertise an actual product rather than self-inspired shoots for school. welcome to the real world! it was certainly a pleasant welcome!

i don't believe that the product has launched yet, but it should be coming soon! everyone (everyone who is legal, that is...) should go buy a bottle when it launches. for more information on Blackleaf Vodka you can go to their web-site at www.blackleafvodka.com.

thanks for stopping in! there are headshots coming! i said that last time i know, but they are coming!

The Pricing of Photography

i found a blog post by Blair Banks today which curtails the pricing of professional photography. this is for you all who wonder why photographer's seem to be so expensive and why the sale of prints and the like are not included in a sitting fee. Blair is a child photographer in the baltimore area and she uses a great analogy and a lot of practical examples of why photographer's charge what they charge. to see what she has to say, you can check out Blair's blog at http://blairbanks.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-husband-got-kindle-and-i-got-to.html?spref=fb

my own, personal philosophy on pricing is based on a case-by-case estimating system. every shoot should be unique and different, so who's to say that every 3 hour long studio shoot should be this much and that a great wedding photograph package should be that much? estimating each shoot also gives me as the photographer and the client an opportunity to get to know each other more on a personal AND a professional level. i can learn what they want, what they like, what they do, some of their favorite objects or things to do, places to go, clothes to wear... a lot of things that will help us both have a creative and successful shoot so that they can walk away with images that they can be proud of and look at and show to their grandkids 50 years down the line.

anywho, i had been getting quite a few e-mails about pricing and such recently and so this was just something that was on my slab of mental musings over the past few days. now it's on (virtual) paper for you all to see!

also, make sure you check back soon for a gallery of headshots i recently took of a great friend of mine. her name is Barrett Johnson and she is a music major who happens to be one semester away from graduating from the University of Miami. she looks absolutely stunning in the photos and i can't wait to share them with you!

'til next time!
