Kosoko Performance Group

through my internship (which is going great by the way!), a handful of other interns and myself have teamed up with one of the fellows here at the Kennedy Center to help build and promote his performance group. Kosoko Performance Group was founded in 2006 and is a philadelphia-based, interdisciplinary performance group that is set up as an ensemble of dancers, actors, writers, visual artists, etc. i am heading up the graphics for this endeavor and thought i would share with you some of the process. currently, i am working on the re-branding and this is what i've come up with.

i have basically taken the previous logo which was a photograph and used the shape of the figure to create the silhouetted figures in the photo above. my goal is to finalize these soon and get to work on laying out a press kit for KPG in the next couple of weeks. leave comments here and elt me know what you think! i will also be designing banners and buttons and graphics for the organizations web-site, and consulting on some content for strategic and artistic planning.

anyways, i also have a few weddings coming up and hopefully a few headshot sessions, so be on the lookout for those. also, i updated my web-site a little bit with a new bio and a new gallery for my graphic design portfolio (make sure to check it out to see some of the other work i am doing through my internship). and feel free to leave comments!

man, i love being busy!

Headshots : Barrett Johnson

here are those headshots i've been talking about. i picked a few of my favorites to share with you all. Barrett and i have been friends for a few years and it was about time to get some photos of her into my portfolio. they came out quite excellent, but it's easy to get great photos when you have a great subject. have a look...

hope you like them!

Blackleaf Update

a couple of months ago i posted a finished photograph i did for a new product which is launching called "Blackleaf Vodka", but i didn't really think much of it because it was an assignment for school. i randomly decided to check the web-site last night and was very excited to see my image! they have the site separated into different tabs, and mine is under the "Signature Drinks" tab.

if you remember from my post (or check my web-site!!! www.scottybeland.com), you already know that i shot the pomegranate concoction which they call the "Blackleaf Pomtini". the red one! it's really neat to see my work used to advertise an actual product rather than self-inspired shoots for school. welcome to the real world! it was certainly a pleasant welcome!

i don't believe that the product has launched yet, but it should be coming soon! everyone (everyone who is legal, that is...) should go buy a bottle when it launches. for more information on Blackleaf Vodka you can go to their web-site at www.blackleafvodka.com.

thanks for stopping in! there are headshots coming! i said that last time i know, but they are coming!

The Pricing of Photography

i found a blog post by Blair Banks today which curtails the pricing of professional photography. this is for you all who wonder why photographer's seem to be so expensive and why the sale of prints and the like are not included in a sitting fee. Blair is a child photographer in the baltimore area and she uses a great analogy and a lot of practical examples of why photographer's charge what they charge. to see what she has to say, you can check out Blair's blog at http://blairbanks.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-husband-got-kindle-and-i-got-to.html?spref=fb

my own, personal philosophy on pricing is based on a case-by-case estimating system. every shoot should be unique and different, so who's to say that every 3 hour long studio shoot should be this much and that a great wedding photograph package should be that much? estimating each shoot also gives me as the photographer and the client an opportunity to get to know each other more on a personal AND a professional level. i can learn what they want, what they like, what they do, some of their favorite objects or things to do, places to go, clothes to wear... a lot of things that will help us both have a creative and successful shoot so that they can walk away with images that they can be proud of and look at and show to their grandkids 50 years down the line.

anywho, i had been getting quite a few e-mails about pricing and such recently and so this was just something that was on my slab of mental musings over the past few days. now it's on (virtual) paper for you all to see!

also, make sure you check back soon for a gallery of headshots i recently took of a great friend of mine. her name is Barrett Johnson and she is a music major who happens to be one semester away from graduating from the University of Miami. she looks absolutely stunning in the photos and i can't wait to share them with you!

'til next time!

Ringin' in the New Year

so the last time i made a post i was just about to graduate. and now i've officially graduated and i am getting ready for the new year! the ceremony was really nice... i had been dreading it all quarter, but it really was not that bad. the national building museum is BEAUTIFUL and was the perfect venue for our exhibits and ceremony. i gave out a lot of resumes and business cards and such, so hopefully some business comes around. now that i'm done i can focus on working and building a successful business in the new year! i already have a few things lined up in addition to my internship at the Kennedy Center, but i am always looking for more. my plan is to send some marketing materials to the professional theatres in the DC area such as Arena, Signature and Woolly-Mammoth and i will certainly keep you all in the know on what i am doing. anywho! i'm sure this post was a little bit anti-climactic, but i don't have much else to say and i just wanted to give a heads up before the new year starts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!
